Following the adoption of an update to the single family residential development standards in 2017, the City Council directed the City to schedule a regular "user group" meeting with the Mercer Island Community to identify needed clarifying amendments to the code.
The purpose of the user group meetings is to allow the identification of necessary amendments to the Mercer Island City Code that clarify or simplify the adopted code language. The user group meetings are intended to identify amendments to land use regulations (Title 19 MICC) that would clarify the code.
The user group is intended to identify improvements to the regulations, not sweeping changes to the regulations; for example, a clarification on the methodology to calculate gross floor area would be an appropriate amendment to share with the user group.
The user groups is not intended as a place to identify board policy changed to the regulations. For example, a proposal to eliminate the gross floor area regulations would not be an appropriate amendment for the user group.
Amendments to the land use regulations that are identified through the user group process will be placed on the City's docket of code amendments for review by the Planning Commission and eventual action by the City Council.
The user group meetings are not public meetings and are not intended as a forum to express grievances with City of Mercer Island.
Code Docket Items
April 2018 Meeting:
The user group is made up of citizens, builders, architects, arborists, Planning Commissioners, and City of Mercer Island staff. Generally, participants are either residents of the island, or are regularly involved in development and building on Mercer Island. Typically, there are between 12 and 16 user group members; membership may change after each meeting.
User group meetings are intended to allow for a free exchange of ideas, which will result in proposed code amendment ideas for further review by the Planning Commission and City Council. Meetings are generally informal and facilitated by the City staff.
If you are interested in attending a user group meeting, please contact Planning Manager Evan Maxim at firstname.lastname@example.org or 206-275-7732.
Meetings are scheduled as needed, up to twice a year.
