Sustainability Policy Task Force

Task Force report; click to read

In March 2012, Mayor Bruce Bassett announced the appointment of 11 community members and two Councilmembers to the Sustainability Policy Task Force. Set with the mission of developing sustainability policy that will direct the Cityís actions and priorities in being a sustainable City, the Task Force identified policy topics and action items that would have the greatest near term opportunity to reduce the Islandís environmental impact, save money both for City operations and for residents, and improve Islandersí quality of life.  Over the course of six committee meetings and a dozen subcommittee meetings, the Sustainability Policy Task Force worked to define sustainability-related issues that affect Mercer Island residents.

One of the key outcomes of the report was a recommendation to hire of a full-time Sustainability Manager position, charged with taking these policies and developing and implementing a comprehensive Sustainability Action Plan for the City. That position was filled in April 2013, and the work is currently underway.

Until a Sustainability Action Plan is completed, the Task Force Recommendations represent the most recent document guiding City sustainability planning.

The City also includes a section on Sustainability Policies and Programs in its Biennial Budget, which serves as a compilation of current work on this topic. View those budget sections here.
