Your Side Sewer
Your side sewer connects the plumbing system from your home or business to the main sewer line, which is typically located in the street but sometimes offshore on Mercer Island. Maintenance and repair of this side sewer is your responsibility. The City is responsible for the maintenance of the main sewer line.
FOG and tree roots are the most common problem for side sewers.
Keep fats, oil and grease (FOG) out of your side sewer and therefore out of Mercer Islandís sanitary sewer system.
Never pour grease or put food waste down the drain or toilet.
Use a food scraper to put leftover food into your compost or trashónot down the garbage disposal.
Pour leftover cooking oil into a can and put it in the trash.
Tree roots are also a common problem. If you have many large, well-established trees in your yard, itís a good idea to hire a rooter service on an annual or semi-annual basis to have them grind out the roots from your side sewer.
