Medal Recipients

Firefighters & Police Officers often perform duties that are extraordinary. On occasion these actions are so unique that they deserve special recognition. The Mercer Island Police and Fire Departments have several forms of recognition for its employees. The highest form of recognition is the awarding of medals. The Mercer Island Police and Fire Departments have three types of this award.
 

Medal of Honor

The Medal of Honor may be awarded to those members who distinguish themselves by conspicuous bravery and/or heroism involving other persons actually present, where hostile action or extreme danger is a factor, and injury is sustained by the member as a direct result of the action being recognized.
 

Medal of Valor

The Medal of Valor may be awarded to those members who distinguish themselves by conspicuous bravery and/or heroism involving other persons actually present, where hostile action or extreme danger is involved.
 

Distinguished Service Medal

The Distinguished Service Medal may be awarded to those members who:
  • Exhibit unusual thoroughness, conscientiousness, determination, and initiative in the performance of duty over a period of time.
  • Action which brings honor and distinction to the Department.
  • An act resulting in the saving of human life with risk to personal safety.
  • An act of distinct service by a private citizen to the The Mercer Island Police and/or Fire Department, which is determined to be of major proportions and has had a significant impact on a primary facet of Police of Fire Operations.
