City Announces Curfew From 7:00pm June 1 Through 5:00am June 2

June 1, 2020 - At today’s 2:00pm video briefing on the ongoing peaceful protests and destructive riots occurring in our neighboring cities, Mayor Benson Wong and City Manager Jessi Bon announced a mandatory curfew, effective from 7:00pm tonight (June 1) until 5:00am on Tuesday, June 2.
Based on concerns over the potential targeting of Mercer Island businesses, and for the safety of all individuals, the City has implemented this temporary measure which will be enforced by police officers. This will apply to everyone except essential critical infrastructure workers.
Following remarks from Mayor Wong about the community’s support of free speech and inclusion, Police Chief Ed Holmes addressed the City’s preparations.
The City has tactical plans in place to address criminal activity and has ongoing cooperative support from neighboring cities and the Washington State Patrol. Detectives are also working to validate rumors of any planned gatherings.
The City also encourages business owners to take the necessary precautions to keep your business, your employees, and your patrons safe by closing no later than 7:00pm today, and by securing your property.
All residents are asked to cooperate by staying home and forwarding credible leads to the police by calling 9-1-1. At this time, it is not known whether a curfew will be necessary tomorrow night (June 2). Additional updates will be provided via the City’s homepage newsfeed, and social media outlets.
