Mercer Island Mobilizes Emergency Response Volunteers

.
Program Volunteers w/City-Issued Badges and Vests
Apr 16, 2020 - In response to requests received through the City’s Coronavirus Hotline, Mercer Island Emergency Management credentialed volunteers are being activated to help provide assistance to vulnerable populations or others in need. This effort is being coordinated through the City’s Emergency Operations Center and volunteers are Island residents who have attended emergency management training and have been background-checked by the Police Department.

City volunteers can provide assistance with a wide range of non-professional services such as maintaining safe access to your entryways (removing plant growth or debris) or running local on-Island errands when delivery services are not available from retailers. Volunteers will maintain social distancing requirements of 6-feet of separation from others at all times and will leave delivery items on the doorstep. For everyone’s safety, volunteers cannot enter homes or provide transport.

You can easily recognize City volunteers by their City-issued identification badge and bright yellow vest and cap (see photos)

The City is also working with Mercer Island High School students who are available to help seniors troubleshoot technology questions over the phone.

To request assistance, please call the Coronavirus Hotline at (206) 275-7626 or email coronavirus@mercergov.org. The call center will capture the relevant information (name, address, phone number, and specific need) to make sure we can support the request and get a volunteer assigned.  Volunteers are currently available to help Monday through Friday, from 8:00am to 5:00pm.
