Second Annual Arbor Day Celebration October 19

Oct 9, 2019 - Mercer Island's second annual Arbor Day Celebration is scheduled for Saturday, October 19, 9:00am-2:00pm, at Homestead Park. In partnership with Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust (MTSG), volunteers will plant trees and shrubs, remove invasive plants, and spread mulch. This free, family-friendly event kicks off the fall planting season on Mercer Island and is a wonderful day to build community and enhance urban forest habitat.
In 2018, Mercer Island joined over 3,400 communities across America that made the commitment to becoming a Tree City USA. This is achieved by meeting four core standards of sound urban forestry management: maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry, and celebrating Arbor Day. Obtaining this distinction not only recognizes the many ways the City of Mercer Island supports trees and urban forestry, it also makes the City eligible for new grant opportunities to support on-the-ground forest restoration work and policy development.
The Arbor Day Celebration begins at 9:00am (rain or shine), and will have a brief tree-planting ceremony and comments by Mercer Island Mayor Debbie Bertlin at 12:30pm. Lunch and tools are provided for participants, but registration is already full.
