MIPD Marine Patrol Recovers Two Bodies, Presumed Missing Boaters

Oct 1, 2019 - On September 30, at approximately 4:30pm, the Mercer Island Police Marine Patrol located and recovered two bodies from Lake Washington. Both bodies were recovered from 110 feet of water, approximately 1 mile from the Mercer Island shore, in the 7800 block area of West Mercer Way.

These bodies are presumed to be the missing boaters from September 2nd. There were no obvious signs of foul play/trauma and investigators will work with the King County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause and manner of death as well as confirming identification.

Our officers have been in contact with the families during this investigation and the Medical Examiner informed them of the recovery. Our thoughts are with them in this trying time.

The City and MIPD would like to thank the partner agencies who have assisted with this investigation including the Seattle Police Harbor Patrol Unit and the King County Marine Patrol. MIPD would also like to thank Jesse Rodocker from Strategic Robotic Systems who provided both on-site technical expertise as well as use of their newest underwater, remote-operated vehicle. MIPD's Marine Officers have spent many hours over the course of the past month scouring the lake bottom during this complicated investigation.

Questions should be directed to MIPD Commander Jeff Magnan, 206-275-7917

ORIGINAL PRESS RELEASE:
On September 2, 2019, at approximately 10:30pm, Mercer Island Police responded to loud music coming from a boat offshore in the 7700 block of West Mercer Way. Officers responded in the City's Marine Patrol Boat and found the vessel, which was still playing loud music. The boat, a red 20-foot ski-type boat, was found to be unoccupied.

There was evidence aboard that at least two people were aboard at some time in the evening, however, attempts to locate its occupants were to no avail. Mercer Island Police were joined by Seattle Harbor Patrol and the United States Coast Guard (USCG) in searching the lake. With winds out of the north, northwest, it is
presumed the vessel drifted from Seattle’s jurisdictional waters. Coast Guard used a helicopter to search the lake surface as ground and other marine units searched the water and shoreline. A truck and trailer were located, which were associated with the boat, at Gene Coulon Park, City of Renton. Both were impounded as this investigation continues.

Officers and Detectives have contacted friends and family and have determined that there were at least one adult male and one adult female aboard who are currently missing. Both were from the Seattle area and the male was experienced operating this vessel. The search continues with the assistance of Seattle Police Harbor Patrol and USCG. Updates will be posed to media and social media outlets.
