Two Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Projects Completed

Dec 21, 2018 - Over the past several weeks, the City has welcomed the completion of two notable and long-awaited bicycle and pedestrian safety projects at the north end of the Island.
On December 6, a brief ceremony celebrated major City-led improvements achieved along SE 40th Street near Northwood Elementary. These new curbs, sidewalks and bicycle lanes will enhance the City's Safe-Routes-to-School program. At the ribbon-cutting event, Mayor Bertlin, Councilmember Weiker, and City staff gathered with School District and School Board representatives to welcome State grant funders, community members, advocates and neighbors. With this completion, just one "missing link" (to be studied next year) remains on a continuous North-South, marked bicycle route. Learn more project background
Meanwhile, over at the MI Park and Ride, Sound Transit recently installed new safety features along the curb frontage where the Mountains to Sound (aka I-90) bicycle trail runs adjacent to North Mercer Way. Improvements included removal of obstacles, relocation of westbound bus shelters, clear pavement markings, and much-improved sight lines. The updates will help separate user types and remind bus riders and pedestrians to keep an eye out for bikes, and vice versa.
City Manager Julie Underwood noted that: “Local bicycle and pedestrian advocacy group Neighbors in Motion (NIM) was particularly helpful in marshaling and maintaining community support for both of these safety and connectivity upgrades. We really appreciate their constructive collaboration.”
