Mayor Proclaims April Sexual Assault Awareness Month

Apr 11, 2018 – At last week’s April 3 Council meeting, Mayor Debbie Bertlin proclaimed April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) in the City of Mercer Island. The proclamation is intended to raise public awareness about sexual violence and educate communities on how to prevent it. Individuals can embrace their voices to show their support for survivors, stand up to victim blaming, shut down rape jokes, correct harmful misconceptions, promote everyday consent, and practice healthy communications with children. The attention SAAM generates is an opportunity to energize and expand prevention efforts throughout the year.

Accepting the Proclamation on behalf of the community was Island resident Lawton Penn, Vice President of the King County Sexual Assault Resource Center (KCSARC) Board of Directors. As an employment lawyer with Davis Wright Tremaine LLP for 24 years, she advises employers on all aspects of the employment relationship, including employment agreements, disability accommodation, workplace investigations and managing the range of challenging personnel issues.

The King County Sexual Assault Resource Center provides sexual assault-related services for people of all ages in King County, while working toward the ultimate goal of eliminating sexual violence and abuse from our communities. The Center is on the frontline with victims and their families, ensuring that all people affected by sexual assault get the treatment they need and advocacy they deserve. The KCSARC is also at the forefront of change, guiding public policy development and delivering best practice education to create safer environments for everyone.
